Leaders of government employees in the city of Oaxaca threaten a strike to paralyze the city if 22 million pesos missing from their pension fund are not returned.
Marcelino Coache Verano, a leader in the employees’ union, announced the union would call on APPO (Assembly Popular People of Oaxaca) to seize all city offices if necessary.
Coache named the governmental administrators believed to be responsible for the theft and suggested the missing funds had been used to finance PRI”s recent political campaigns.
Three thousand government workers associated with different unions have therefore called an assembly to review the problem and take the actions necessary to recover the stolen funds.
At the same time, the union leader called on the new city administration led by a member of the PAN political party to take the actions necessary to avoid “inheriting” the problem.
In other labor issues, a three day strike by the city’s cleaning workers ended after promises received from the administration to meet demands related to classifications and work equipment as well as repairs and better maintenance of 20 garbage trucks. The union leader announced garbage collection would be renewed on Friday the 6th of August in center city and Abastos market and in surrounding neighborhoods on Sunday the 8th of August.
